FAQ

These questions seem to come up all the time. Some of them seem really obvious yet people still ask them, so they are included. Don't believe me? Wait until the 75th granny in a row asks you if you sit on it!

1. What's that skate bike scooter board thing? Well now you know it's a Surfari inline all terrain skateboard.

2. It looks impossible to ride. How does it work? The Surfari inline board relies on a patented steering geometry which causes the front wheel to automatically balance the rider once moving, adjusts to speed and the cornering is intuitively tied into the riders lean. In effect - the board balances the rider and becomes more stable the faster you go. Finally you can appear talented without having to spend months of time learning and practicing. And still this board has performance levels yet to be tapped.

3. Do you sit / kneel / lie on it? Uh yeah sure, obviously on the FOOTstraps!

4. How fast do they go? Well they don't get speed wobbles, so there are no arbitrary limits. So far been around 85kph downhill and towed over 120kph.

5. Is it like snowboarding / surfing / skateboarding? Really it shares similarities to all of them. The feel of the ride is most similar to surfing where the front leads the turn, the board moves in a natural way with you, and you are free to express yourself in the ride. The actual runs are more like snowboarding runs especially when you get into freestyle.

6. How do they compare to a mountainboard / dirtsurfer? Mountainboards have a comparable turning radius but are much slower, prone to speed wobbles, traverse really badly, and have a most nonintuitive ride (except maybe to skaters). They are good for freestyle and for rougher crappy terrain, but are really wasted for perfection rides. Dirtsurfers are faster than a mountainboard but have a seriously suck turning radius and hence severely limit the freedom of expression in the ride. If you have to ride in a certain way to combat speed wobbles (read - random painful collisions with the ground for no reason) then you do not have freedom of expression. If you have to ride within the boards turn limitations and neglect what you can see as possible in your mind, you do not have true freedom of expression. To contrast, the Surfari inline boards has no issues with speed, stability, control or maneuverability.

7. How hard is it to learn? General learning curve is around 10 minutes. Kids get it quicker. As the board balances you, and most everyone trying it will already have the ability to stand up, the main barriers are psychological. Start on a nice grass slope. Keep the deck flat and the board will go straight. Let it run and gain a bit of speed and stability, lock your ankles and lean out to corner. Then relax let the board balance you. If you can ride a bike you can do this.

8. Can you slide them? Sure. Not so much on the roads like a long board. Slides good as over shingle, wet grass, sand, gravel, loose dirt etc. The board balances you throughout the slide and corrects your balance as you ride out of it.

9. Can you ride fakie? Well it is possible, but they're not designed for that and will require some skill and practice. It is a directional board.

10. How do you stop? It has a leg activated caliper brake system which is activated when you lean back.

11. How old do yo have to be? Generally by around 8 although they may need to be heavier.

12. What sorts of terrain can it surf? Pretty much everything between the tide line and the snow line. Now if it slopes - surf it! Road, grass, dirt, gravel, concrete etc. Having said that, the board definitely prefers perfect runs and not rough crappy terrain. It's from the school of 6 - 8 foot barrels, not from blown out onshore days! The quest continues...

13. Do I need to wear safety pads / helmet (... seeing as I'm tougher than the ground and am so talented gravity won't pull me down anyway...)? Safety gear is always recommended. You will fall, or else you're not pushing your boundaries. Better to get up and ride again than be injured and have time out.

14. What is terminal velocity? This is when you are going too fast to be able to just step off, and are hence committed. Unless you use the brakes.

15. Can you ollie / bunny hop / jump / freestyle? They certainly can go BIG as they can hit the launchpad at any speed. Landing is a bit trickier than on 4 wheels but the auto balancing geometry saves you often. The wheels are held centre in the air by the freestyle kit. From my experience, freestyle is in the mind of the rider. I personally jump just as badly on any craft.

16. Can you scoot / skate? Sure. Takes a bit longer to learn than just riding. But I've officially given up walking, cause now I can surf everywhere. Note - must push mongo.
